Hay fever sufferers across the UK are hailing a miracle hay fever medicine that was previously only available by prescription on the NHS – which is now selling like wildfire.
The super strength tablets were previously only available with an NHS prescription, and you had to convince your GP that you are in enough pain to justify the £9+ prescription charge for the pills. But this year, for the first time, the tablets are available over the counter – and hay fever sufferers are sweeping them off the shelves.
Fexofenadine hydrochloride, which is currently sold under the brand name Allevia or Treathay in the UK, is now available without a prescription for the first time, meaning you can now buy it over the counter from Boots, Superdrug and supermarkets like Asda and Tesco from as low as £4 per box on offer, rising to £7 per box depending on store and number of tablets.

Hay fever sufferers say the tablets are so good that they have completely CURED their hay fever symptoms. They described the tablets – which are stronger than traditional tablets like cetirizine hydrochloride and loratadine – as making them feel like they had no more hay fever.
But the downside is that supply cannot keep up with demand during the recent scorching heat which saw ‘pollen bomb’ levels rise with huge amounts of floral discharge in the air.
One hay fever sufferer told YorkshireLive: “I went to three different supermarkets to try and find it. It was completely sold out at Asda Handsworth in Sheffield, and it was sold out at two others in Leeds.
“I bought some online, but even on Amazon Prime there is about a week backlog of orders and it took a week to get to the ‘next day’ delivery service.
“The reason is that it works. It’s much stronger than regular hay fever tablets, so my reactions are much more under control.
“I don’t know what I would have done without her this year when the pollen has been absolutely crazy.
“Last year I got some on prescription, but now they’re available over the counter, it’s much easier and cheaper to get hold of – until they’re all sold out.”
Other hay fever sufferers agree with the quality of the tablets.
Ben Newmark said: “HAY FEVER SUFFERERS Allevia is now available over-the-counter and I haven’t felt this good in the summer in a decade.”
Matty Ester added: “I went from having the worst hay fever you’ll ever see in your life to feeling like I never had it. Allevia, you cured me.”
@Nikk1noodles said: “Fexofenadine aka Allevia 120mg over the counter at Boots. Took a few days to get started but this week I’m hay fever free. No itch, no eye drops, no nasal sprays. 10/10 would recommend.”
@therealmadrina said: “Allevia hay fever tablets are totally worth it – they have worked wonders for me”
@RettsUK said: “Guys Allevia really are the best tablets for hay fever. I suffer badly from hay fever but with one a day I haven’t even had a twitch in my nose for weeks!”
@28shan said, “These Allevia tablets made me forget I even suffer from hay fever, they are literally the best.”
A user added that the price of some boxes on Amazon had risen from £7 to £20 during peak demand periods.
